Most closet organization advice follows the same formula: take everything out, sort into piles, buy a set of matching bins, put it all back in a system that looks like a store display. It works for about three weeks.

We wanted something different: a closet edit that would hold up for a full year without maintenance. No seasonal refreshes, no "I'll reorganize the bins next weekend." One afternoon, and done.

The four-box method, but with a twist

The standard advice says to sort into four boxes: keep, donate, store, trash. That's fine as far as it goes, but it misses the most important category. We added a fifth: maybe.

The five-box system that made the difference

1. Keep (daily use)

This box gets smaller than you think. It contains only what you actually wear in a typical two-week cycle. Not what you "should" wear. Not what you wore once last summer. What you grab without thinking.

2. Keep (seasonal)

This is the winter coat in July and the swimsuit in January. It goes into a single labeled bin on the top shelf. The key: everything seasonal must fit in that one bin. No overflow.

3. Donate

Anything you haven't worn in the last year but that someone else might actually use. The trap here is sentiment — a nice shirt you've outgrown, a gift you never liked. Be honest.

4. Trash / recycle

Worn-out socks, stretched-out underwear, stained items, broken hangers. You know what belongs here. Stop moving it back into the closet.

5. Maybe (the twist)

This is where we changed the formula. The "maybe" box holds everything you're unsure about — you haven't worn it in a year but you think you might. The rule is simple: seal the box, label it with today's date, and put it in storage. If you don't open it in the next 12 months, the whole box goes to donation, unopened.

What makes this last a year

The maybe box removes the hardest decision from the editing process. Instead of agonizing over whether to keep that jacket, you defer the decision for a year — and you give yourself permission to let it go later without guilt. Most people never open their maybe box. The ones who do find that whatever they retrieve could have been kept in the daily section anyway.

The result

The afternoon was spent sorting, not shopping. No bins, no dividers, no new shelving. Just a clear set of categories and a honest look at what actually gets worn. One year later, the closet still works because the system doesn't fight how you actually dress. It just makes space for it.

Summary

Five boxes: keep (daily), keep (seasonal), donate, trash, and maybe. The maybe box does the heavy lifting. One afternoon, zero maintenance for a year.
